The concept for this album was something I considered making into the soundtrack of a small game.

In spring 2018, when I was in college, I took an introductory C++ programming class. For the final project, the class was split into three groups, each of which would make a small text-based game (about five minutes of gameplay). As we figured out what we could and couldn't accomplish, the concept for our game went through a few major iterations. Eventually, we settled on a format that I would describe as "a visual novel without visuals." The story centered around a man working through the five stages of grief in a comatose dream, after losing his daughter in a car accident.

I considered making a soundtrack of simple, ambient tunes to convey the basic emotions of each stage, but I didn't feel like I had the time. After the semester was over, I still wanted to write some music based on this concept. So, I challenged myself to do something different--I would write a short and simple tune in a single day, for each of the five stages. I would record a session of me playing various chords, and then I would take parts of those sessions and work them into an actual song. In my commitment to the challenge, I told myself I had to finish the song enough to upload it to SoundCloud within the day. No second-guessing myself! It was a fun challenge, and I think the result was pretty cool!
